William Lyons (1894-1964) started Swallow Sidecars in 1922 with William Walmsley manufacturing motorcycle sidecars in Blackpool. Various bodies were fitted to Austin Seven, Morris Cowley, Swift, Fiat and Wolseley chassis from about 1928 and led, in 1931, to the first original car named the SSI. Largely based on Standard Motor Company components the SSI was fitted with a two-litre engine and by 1932 the SSII had a one-litre unit.

1935 and 1936 saw the introduction of the SS90 and the, now classic, SS100. 1936 also saw the first use of the name Jaguar on a new range of cars.

During the war the factory was turned over to aircraft and munitions work.

After the war the 1.5, 2.5 and 3.5 litre Jaguars of 1940 were reintroduced and remained in production until 1948 when new versions of the 2.5 and 3.5 litre were marketed as the Jaguar Mk V.

The first post war sports car was the XK120 of 1948 fitted with Jaguars own twin overhead camshaft engine which has been in production in several forms ever since.

The XK120 became the 140 then the 150 before being replaced by the E-Type in 1961. The E-Type had its roots in the sports/racing C-Types and D-Types developed throughout the 1950's.
