The first Hutton's (also known as the Simplex) were powered by rear-mounted M.M.C., De Dion or Aster 5 or 6hp engines with two-speed belt transmission and vis-à-vis bodywork.

In the years 1903 to 1905 production moved to Thames Ditton in Surrey where conventional four-cylinder 12 or 20hp cars were built. An experiment was made with the Barber automatic transmission but no examples were offered for sale.

In 1908 three four-cylinder cars were made in the Napier factory for the 1908 Tourist Trophy. These were actually Napier designs but were called Hutton because SF Edge had decried the four-cylinder engine so much that he did not want the cars to run under the Napier name.

One of the cars, driven by W Watson, won the TT and the car still exists.

Another Hutton took 26hp class records at Brooklands in 1908.
